Biography
Son of Raja Sir Padam Singh of Bushehr; born at Sarahan, District Shimla on 23rd
June, 1934; B.A. (Hons), M.A.; educated at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla and St.
Stephen’s College, Delhi; married; Agriculturist and Horticulturist.
Honorary Captain in the Indian
Army; associated with various cultural & social organizations including
President of Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan and Friends of Soviet Union Society (H.P.
State Branch).
Elected Member, Lok Sabha in
1962, 1967, 1972 and in 1980; member of Indian Delegation to the General
Assembly of the United Nations, 1976; remained Deputy Minister, Tourism and
Civil Aviation, Govt. of India from December 1976 to March 1977; Minister of
State for Industries, Government of India from September 1982 to April 1983.
Elected to the State
Legislative Assembly from Jubbal-Kotkhai Constituency, twice (first on 5th
October, 1983 in a by-election and again in 1985 general elections) before being
elected from a nearby Rohru Constituency in 1990, 1993, 1998 and 2003.
Chief Minister of the State,
April 1983 to March 1990 and December 1993 to March 1998; Leader of Opposition
in the Assembly, March 1998 to March 2003. Sworn in as Chief Minister again on
6th March, 2003.
